Their own exams were recent

A view of university life

They can tell your child what a degree is like week to week: the course, the workload, and the grades it took to get in.

The essentials. What it costs, how it starts, what you get after, and how parents rate it.

Your first 4 lessons are an intro rate, from £15 each. After that you pay per lesson, from £24/hr. No sign-up fee, no subscription.

Two GCSEs, four exams, and set texts your child has to know without the book in front of them.

Can one tutor cover English Language and Literature?

Yes. Our tutors teach both GCSEs, and we match to whichever needs the work.

Language leans on creative writing and comprehension; Literature on analytical essays about set texts. Whether your child needs help with creative writing, analytical essays or understanding a set text, we match them with a tutor who specialises in it.

Which set texts do your tutors know?

The major ones for AQA, Edexcel and OCR, plus the poetry anthologies.

An Inspector Calls, Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet, Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm, with the themes, characters and context examiners ask about.

Can a tutor improve my child's essays?

Yes. Essays are the core skill in both GCSEs.

Tutors teach structure, analysis, how to embed quotations and how to write under timed conditions. On the interactive whiteboard they annotate a text together and build the essay plan in real time.

The GCSE English papers, board by board. Every board sets two Language and two Literature papers, but the lengths, weightings and texts differ.

AQA (8700 and 8702)

Language. Two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks each, both ending in a 40-mark writing task: descriptive or narrative in Paper 1, a viewpoint in Paper 2.

Literature. Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel (1 hour 45 minutes, 40%), then modern texts and poetry (2 hours 15 minutes, 60%), with a 32-mark unseen poetry section.

Pearson Edexcel (1EN0 and 1ET0)

Language. Fiction and Imaginative Writing (1 hour 45 minutes, 40%) opens with an unseen 19th-century extract; Non-fiction and Transactional Writing (2 hours 5 minutes, 60%) sets two linked non-fiction texts.

Literature. Shakespeare with a post-1914 British play or novel, then the 19th-century novel with poetry, including two unseen contemporary poems.

OCR (J351 and J352)

Language. Two 2-hour papers of 80 marks. The 19th-century text is non-fiction and comes in Paper 1; Paper 2 is modern literary prose and creative writing.

Literature. Modern and 19th-century texts in one paper, poetry and Shakespeare in the other. The unseen texts include a modern prose or drama extract, not only a poem.

Everything happens in one lesson room. Built for learning, and for the parent who is not in it.

Work it out together, on one board

Not a screen share. Tutor and student write, draw and solve on the same canvas in real time, exactly as on paper, and every board is saved for revision.

Frequently asked questions. Everything you need to know about GCSE English tutoring at StudyGuru.

Do you cover both GCSE English Language and Literature?
Yes. We have tutors who specialise in both GCSE English Language and English Literature. Whether your child needs help with creative writing, analytical essays, or understanding set texts, we can match them with the right tutor.
Which set texts do your tutors cover?
Our tutors are familiar with all the major set texts including An Inspector Calls, Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, and the poetry anthologies for AQA, Edexcel, and OCR.
Can tutoring help improve my child's essay writing?
Yes. Essay writing is a key skill for both English Language and Literature. Our tutors teach structure, analysis techniques, how to embed quotations, and how to write under timed conditions.
How many exams are there in GCSE English?
Four, if your child takes both English Language and English Literature: two papers for each. On AQA and OCR the Language papers carry 50% each; on Edexcel they are split 40% and 60%. Spoken Language is assessed separately by the teacher and does not count towards the grade.
Is GCSE English Literature an open-book exam?
No. On AQA, Edexcel and OCR every Literature paper is closed book, so your child needs to know the set texts and remember quotations without the book in front of them. There is no coursework either: GCSE English Literature is 100% exam.
How is the 40-mark writing question in GCSE English Language marked?
On all three boards, 24 of the 40 marks are for content and organisation and 16 are for technical accuracy: spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and sentence structure. Technical accuracy alone is 40% of the task.
Does the Spoken Language endorsement count towards the grade?
No. It is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction (or Not Classified), shown separately on the certificate, and carries no marks towards the 9 to 1 English Language grade. On Edexcel it is a presentation of up to 10 minutes.
