A Retake Is a Fresh Start, Not a Setback
Plenty of students retake an A-Level and go on to the university or career they wanted. With a full year and the right support, one grade can change everything.
One Grade Counts
A single grade can be the difference between a firm offer and Clearing. A retake puts that back in your hands.
Grades Can Improve
You already know most of the content. Targeted tutoring closes the specific gaps and sharpens exam technique where it matters.
A Full Year to Prepare
Because A-Levels are sat each summer, a retake gives you months to rebuild confidence properly, not a last-minute scramble.
How and When You Can Resit
A-Levels are sat once a year in May and June, with results in August. There is no autumn series, so a retake means the next summer. You can resit in one of two ways.
At School or College
Stay on for a repeat year or join a college retake programme
Your centre handles exam entry
Tutoring adds focused, one-to-one support on your weak topics
As a Private Candidate
Find a centre on the JCQ private candidates list
Register before the deadline (usually the previous autumn)
Study independently with online tutoring for the teaching
You retake all papers for the subject (A-Levels are linear)
Missed Your University Offer?
Before deciding to retake, work through your options on results day. A retake is one strong route, but it is not the only one.
1. Ask for a priority remark
If you narrowly missed a grade, request a priority remark straight away. The university may hold your place while it is reviewed.
2. Contact the university
Speak to admissions directly. If you only just missed the offer, they may still accept you or hold your place until early September.
3. Consider Clearing
Clearing (open until October) can secure a place on a course with spaces this year, sometimes at a similar or different university.
4. Retake and reapply
If you want a more competitive course, retake next summer and reapply with stronger grades. This is where focused tutoring pays off most.
Our tutors specialise in the STEM and Economics subjects where a retake most often moves the needle. Each tutor knows the exam boards and mark schemes inside out.
A-Level Maths
Pure, mechanics and statistics, with the exam technique to secure the marks you dropped first time.
Everything you need to know about resitting your A-Levels
Can you retake A-Levels?
Yes. You can retake A-Levels in the next summer exam series (May and June), either at your school or college or as a private candidate at a registered exam centre. A-Levels are linear, so you resit all of the papers for a subject in one series rather than individual units. Many students retake just one subject while keeping the grades they are happy with.
When can you resit A-Level exams?
A-Level exams are sat once a year, in May and June, with results on A-Level results day in August. There is no autumn resit series for most A-Level subjects, so a retake means sitting the papers the following summer. That gives most students close to a full academic year to prepare, which is ideal for targeted one-to-one tutoring.
Can you retake A-Levels as a private candidate?
Yes. If you have left school, you can enter as a private candidate through an exam centre registered with your exam board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR or WJEC). The centre runs the exam; it does not have to teach the course. You find a centre via the JCQ private candidates list, register before the deadline (usually the previous autumn), and pay the entry fees. Online tutoring covers the teaching side.
Should I retake my A-Levels or go through Clearing?
It depends on your goal. If you narrowly missed an offer, first ask for a priority remark and contact the university, as they may still accept you or hold your place. If you want a place this year, Clearing (open until October) can find one, while retaking and reapplying next cycle can raise your grades for more competitive courses. Many students combine a gap year with a retake.
Do universities accept A-Level retakes?
Most universities accept A-Level retakes and consider them on the same basis as first attempts. A small number of highly competitive courses (such as medicine) may prefer first-sitting grades or ask about your circumstances, so it is worth checking each course's admissions policy before you commit. A stronger set of grades from a retake generally widens your options.
How much does A-Level retake tutoring cost?
A-Level retake tutoring at StudyGuru starts from £24 per hour, the same rate at every level. New students can try any tutor with a £15 Starter Pack of four sessions before committing. Sessions are one-to-one and online, focused on the exact topics and exam technique you need to lift your grade.
